A stand-alone track celebrating the 700th anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath (Scotland's "Declaration of Independence").

6 years previously, in 1314, Robert the Bruce and his Scottish army had beaten English forces under the command of Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn.

Edward had then used his influence with the Pope to have the Independent state and its king excommunicated.

The document was a petition to the Pope asking that this be rescinded and that Scotland's right to exist as an Independent nation be recognised. The petition was successful.

...............................................

The original document was in Latin, the chorus is adapted from a translated version.

lyrics

1314 and aa the airts were donnert and amazed
For Edward's might and Edward's knights
Had sairely lost the day
The vauntie monarch fled the field
That he had thocht tae win
The rear end o his cherger wis
The last we saw o him

Chorus:
Not for glory, not for riches
Nor for honours dae we fight
We wid but see the light o freedom dawn
Freedom that nae honest man surrenders withoot life
That Scotland may live free, we'll march on

'Twas on the 6th o April 1320 in Arbroath
A document was scrievit whaur
The barons swore an oath
That Scotland should stand proud and free
That England keep its bounds
Our people wid be sovereign, aye,
And that's the part that counts

Noo different days want different ways, new battles we must face
Nae mair wi pikes and schiltrons
But with words we'll win the race
Frae Shetland's rugged islands
Tae the sands o Solway Firth
Wance mair we'll independent stand and
Show the world oor worth
